Bhamre credits India's 'pressure' in Kulbhushan Jadhav issue

PUNE: Minister of state for defence Subhash Bhamre on Saturday said it was the pressure from both India and the international community that forced Pakistan to allow the wife of Kulbhushan Jadhav to meet him.

On Friday, the Pakistani foreign ministry allowed the arrangement of a visit by Jadhav's wife, on what they called "purely humanitarian grounds".

Bhamre was in the city for the bicentenary celebrations of the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) at the Golibar Maidan, where he was the chief guest. Pune MP Anil Shirole and Rajya Sabha MP Vandana Chavan, senior defence ministry officials and former officials of the Cantonment Board were also present.

At the function, Bhamre also handed out certificates to 11 Cantonment Boards that have been declared open-defecation free.

"The Indian government has been building continuous pressure on Pakistan ever since the capital punishment was proclaimed on Jadhav. His death sentence has been halted due to the strong pressure from the Indian side. The current move to allow Jadhav's wife to meet him is a result of that sustained pressure," he said.

Bhamre said India, along with the international community, has managed to isolate Pakistan on this issue.

An alumnus of Fergusson College, Bhamre reminisced about his college days in the city while praising the civic services of the PCB. He directed officials to look towards reopening a long-closed road between Ghorpadi and Koregaon Park. The road was closed by the city defence authorities.

"I came to know from citizens and officials about this road, closure of which has been causing much hardship to people here. I inspected the spot today and have directed the officials to find a way to reopen this road," he added.
