GURUGRAM: The mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor of Gurgaon formally took charge at MCG office in Sector 34 on Friday, almost a week after taking oath.
However, politics took centre stage again as Gurgaon MP and Union minister Rao Inderjit Singh skipped the joining ceremony for senior deputy mayor Pramila Kablana, who is a Congress-backed candidate, though he was present when mayor Madhu Azad and deputy mayor Sunita Yadav joined office.
Rao Inderjit's rival in BJP, state minister Rao Narbir Singh, had hinted that the Gurgaon MP helped a non-saffron councillor win the senior deputy mayor's post, following a tussle between the two over their choice of their mayoral candidate. And with the divisions between the two BJP ministers increasing by the day, questions are being raised if the three women will be able to bury their differences and work together for the city.
Talking about the mayor, senior deputy mayor and the deputy mayor, Rao Inderjit told TOI, "I am hopeful that the three women who have been sworn in on mayoral posts will work together for the betterment of the city, which generates the maximum revenue for the state."
Asked if their political affiliations would come in the way of working together for the city, Azad, Kablana and Yadav said, their objective "remains the development of Gurgaon" and they would not let any kind of difference come in way of that.
"We will work with the government in implementation of the already-existing policies and bringing out new ones to ensure that Gurgaon lives up to its reputation of the biggest revenue generator in the state," said Azad. "I will focus specifically on the Swachh Gurgaon campaign," she added.
Kablana and Yadav also echoed Azad's views. "As of now, there are multiple plans under MCG such as integrated waste management plan and the roll-out of city bus service. We will help in the augmentation of these services," said Yadav. The three women took over from mayor Vimal Yadav, senior deputy mayor Yashpal Batra and deputy mayor Parminder Kataria. The three positions had been vacant since June 2016. Meanwhile, the urban local bodies department said it would give honorarium to nominated councillors on par with the elected members.
