NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked his ministers to tell the people how his government has worked for improving their ease of living. Interacting with the Union Council of Ministers on Friday, Modi also asked his team to use social media more effectively to propagate the achievements and programmes of the Centre.

Minister of state for agriculture Gajendra Shekhawat made a presentation on how the Modi government has been active in ensuring “ease of living” or improving the standards of living of the people through various schemes and welfare programmes for farmers, poor, backwards and workers. The ministers were encouraged to carry this message to the masses and also give feedback from the ground about the performance of these programmes.

The fight against black money through demonetisation, a uniform tax structure through GST, schemes like Mudra, Jan Dhan, Ujjwala, Swachh Bharat, among others, have made life easier for the masses, the presentation said, according to an insider. The ministers were asked to propagate the achievements of the government to people more effectively. Shekhawat is very active on social media and associated with “Quora.com”, an interactive website on achievements of commoners.

Another presentation was made by an official of the Prime Minister’s Office on the reach and significance of social media and how it should be used by the ministers to educate the people about the various welfare measures. While some ministers have been very active in keeping people informed about their work, some others have lagged behind. The ministers are expected to work in tandem and back up colleagues on social media handles.

This was the first meeting of the entire Union Council of Ministers since the September reshuffle. Modi held a Cabinet meeting before meeting his entire ministry. FM Arun Jaitley could not attend the meeting as he is away in Guwahati to attend the GST Council meeting. Union ministers NS Tomar, Nirmala Sitharaman and Jitendra Singh, all associated with Gujarat campaign, also attended the meeting.
