BHOPAL: Students of Ryan International School, Ghaziabad, who are in Bhopal for a national science exhibition, were stunned when they faced jeers, snide remarks and bizarre questions from visitors. What hurt them most was Madhya Pradesh education minister Vijay Shah's comment: "Oh, you are from killer school?"
In their own words, it was a "heartbreaking day" for the two students representing Ryan International at the 44th Jawaharlal Nehru National Science, Mathematics and Environment Exhibition (JNNSMEE).
"We faced difficulty every time we told visitors that we are from Ryan International," said one of them. "We are terribly shocked by the behaviour of people toward us. We know what happened in Ryan Bhondsi was heart wrenching but does that mean all of us are culprits?" Students told TOI.
When the minister, Shah, walked into the hall, one of the students started explaining his model him. Shah cut him midway and asked him the name of their school. When he mentioned Ryan, Shah laughed out loud and remarked: "Oh, the killer school?" The two students were left speechless. TOI was there during the exchange. Perhaps realising his mistake, the minister tried to cover up his remark by patting the students and telling them he was "just joking".
After this, the students found their breath and tried to explain their model again. But Shah wasn't bothered. He walked off mid-conversation, leaving the students bewildered and hurt.
