Fingers crossed as second spell rains coming to coastal districts of Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: The coastal districts in Tamil Nadu have been put on alert as the prevailing conditions appear favourable for the second big spell of Northeast monsoon showers, which had pounded parts of the State in the initial stage.

Apart from the Delta districts, Kanniyakumari and Tirunelveli have been receiving good amounts of rainfall. Chennai had brief spells of showers since Thursday. Various prediction models suggest the second spell of torrential showers would begin on Sunday.

Sensing the possibility of extraordinary situations in the next one or two days, the government departments concerned have been asked to be prepared for meeting exigencies.

“We have given a general alert to District Collectors asking them to brace up for any situations in the days to come,” said K Satyagopal, Commissioner for Revenue Administration (CRA) and Relief Commissioner.
Another official noted that the district authorities had already been given an elaborate briefing on the precautionary measures to be adopted in connection with the monsoon. So, naturally, they would be in preparatory mode until the monsoon season is over.

Highly vulnerable areas are under watch. Rescue teams, including first responders, have also been put on alert, he stated.
