PUNE: Police on Friday booked a woman for inflicting burn injuries on a five-year-old girl over a minor transgression. The girl is not related to the suspect, but has been living with her for four years, ever since her biological mother disappeared.
The child had accidentally spilt some water over powdered spices that the woman had set aside while cooking. The woman flew into a rage, thrashed the child and used a red-hot spoon to burn her.
The girl suffered burn injuries on her face, private parts, legs and thighs.
A neighbour, Rajanishkumar Tiwari, lodged a complaint with the police, following which the latter filed a case under Section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of Child Care and Protection Act.
Their neighbours rushed the girl to a hospital. She has since been discharged.
According to the neighbours, the Satavwadi woman is not the child's biological mother. She has been taking care of her for the last four years after the girl was abandoned by her mother, who used to live in this neighbourhood. The mother had asked the suspect to look after the child for a day or two and never returned. Her whereabouts are unknown.
The suspect, 33, is married to a casual labourer. They migrated from West Bengal a few years ago, and lived in Gondhalenagar in Hadapsar upon their arrival.
The police said the incident took place around 10pm on November 5. The child was playing in the kitchen area when water from a glass she carried fell on the "masala". Flying into a rage, the woman mercilessly beat the child. Not stopping their, she heated a long spoon and burned the little girl.
The neighbours, including Tiwari, saw the burn injuries the following day and immediately rushed her to the hospital. Then, after discussing the matter among themselves, they decided to approach the police.
