Nagpur: The Nagpur University has received about 15 appeals and objections after the deadline for filling up nominations forms closed on November 3. While the appeals were filed by candidates themselves after their nominations were declared as invalid, objections are by various outfits contesting the elections.

All these appeals and objections were put forth before Vice Chancellor SP Kane who is authorized as per the new Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016 to decide them.

"I've heard some appeals and provided respite to the genuine candidates. I also heard objections, but can't disclose anything on my decision. The entire picture would be cleared by next week when the final list of nominations would be posted on our website," Kane told TOI.

The appeals and objections were filed immediately after NU's election cell, headed by ex-registrar Subhash Belsare, published the preliminary list of nominees for its various statutory bodies on Monday, for its first phase of elections. NU would be conducting polls for 29 Senate seats out of the 39, and eight seats of Academic Council — 2 each from faculty, besides 219 for various Board of Studies (BOS).

The university would be holding its delayed polls for 31 BOS along with Senate and Academic Council on November 25.

One of the objections was received on the nomination of R Murthy, a lecturer from Wardha-based Rani Agnihotri Sharirik Shikshan Mahavidyalaya who is contesting from management quota category. TOI on Wednesday reported about Murthy who has been permanently debarred by NU from exam work. His case came up for hearing before the VC who refused to disclose the details.

He was arrested in connection with the big exam racket unearthed by Wardha police on August 1, 2012. The police raided a house of a college student and found ten students referring to books and writing in their answer sheets long after the exam was over. All students had appeared in the Pharmaceutical Chemistry-I (Organic) paper of Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) first year winter exam earlier in the day.

Murthy was held along with Anil Mahalle, who was centre in-charge for exams, after NU formally lodged an FIR. NU later handed over the case to its Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC). NU's Board of Examinations (BoE) permanently debarring him from the exam work and even cancelled his teacher's approval, which prompted him to knock the judiciary's doors. The HC then ordered status quo on NU's action.
