UDHAGAMANDALAM: As part of the World Senior Citizens Day, nearly 100 elderly people from nine old-age homes in the Nilgiris went on a day-out to a three star hotel. Social welfare department organised the cultural event and Sullivan Court hotel management sponsored the function and food.
The senior citizens, mostly above 80 years, sang and danced to songs. Nallathambi stole the show by singing old numbers from Tamil movies. "This event is organised for the inmates to enjoy and have fun," Devakumari, District Social Welfare Officer said.
J Innocent Divya, Nilgiris collector, who inaugurated the function, said, "Old age is just another part of life. When one realizes this, then there is no stress about aging." Stating that old age is like a rebirth, Divya also asked the participants to share their experience and pearls of wisdom with others.
The collector honoured all the participants with a shawl. Walking sticks were also distributed to the homes like Ramakrishna old-age home, Little Sisters of Poor, and Pope Paul Mercy home.
Sullivan Court sponsored their lunch in a three star hotel. E M Muralikumar, the hotel's general manager said, "This is part of our community service. We are honoured by hosting lunch the senior citizens on this special day".
Raman, 70, one of the senior citizens who kept the audience spellbound with his songs in Badaga language told TOI, "By taking part in such functions we justify our experience. These kinds of event encourage us."
