Mukul targets Didi's kin in first rally for BJP

KOLKATA: The latest heavyweight entrant into the BJP's fold, Mukul Roy made an aggressive debut on a party dais on Friday, saying the Trinamool Congress had become a "limited company" owned by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew and MP Abhishek Banerjee.

Roy held up papers that ostensibly showed Biswa Bangla, which "sponsored" the FIFA Under-17 World Cup, was owned by Abhishek Banerjee and called upon BJP supporters to bring about a "paribartan of paribartan (change of the change)" from the current dispensation's "police raj".

"You all know about the U-17 WC matches in Kolkata. You have all seen it was sponsored by Biswa Bangla. But do you know who owns Biswa Bangla? It's none other than Abhishek Banerjee," Roy said. "This is not all. He is also the owner of Trinamool's mouthpiece Jago Bangla. He reserves the rights of all the pamphlets, posters, banners issued in Trinamool's name."

State home secretary Atri Bhattacharya issued a rejoinder within minutes of the BJP meeting. "The Biswa Bangla brand is the chief minister's brainchild. The CM donated the brand and the logo to the Bengal government. They are registered in the government's name. The state government owns the copyright and the brand," he said. Abhishek Banerjee's lawyer, Sanjay Bose, said, "The charges are devoid of any truth and we will take the strictest possible legal action."
