Udhagamandalam: The Nilgiris will soon get at least 10 Amma parks with gyms. Ten places have already been identified across the Ooty, Coonoor, Kotagiri and Gudalur blocks to set up the parks at a cost of Rs 30 lakh each.
According to the Nilgiris collector, J Innocent Divya, the state government had sanctioned Rs 3 crore in 2016-17 towards developing Amma parks and gyms.
"Each park will be developed at a cost of Rs 20 lakh and the fitness gym, at the cost of Rs 10 lakh each," Divya told TOI. "We have identified 10 places across the four blocks. In some places common lands of the community are used, while in other places revenue lands have been identified for the purpose," she added.
According to Divya, the parks and gyms would be developed with the total participation of the community. When it comes to the maintenance of parks and gyms, it will be of joint responsibility of the community enjoying the facility.
"Basically, the younger generation is much into electronic gadgets and their physical activities are significantly minimized. The initiative is aimed at inculcating among them a habit of physical activities," Divya added.
Ithalar, Mulligoor, Thuneri, Thummanatty, Doddabetta and Aalatty have been identified in Ooty block for the project, while it would be set up at Hubbathalai in Coonoor block. Nedugula in Kotagiri block, Nellakottai and Cherangode in Gudalur block are other locations.
"About eight projects are underway. In two places, the community is not forthcoming when it comes to common land. We will sort out the issue soon," the collector said.
Funds for more Amma parks and gyms are expected in the forthcoming state budget, she added.
