"Both the Biswa Bangla logo and the brand belong to the state," Mamata government said.
KOLKATA: Hours after Bharatiya Janta Party leader Mukul Roy called state government's flagship brand Biswa Bangla as a private company and alleged that it is owned by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek Banerjee, the state government defended Abhishek Banerjee promptly.

At least three press conferences were held to deny Mukul Roy's claim in last few hours. The first was held by the state home secretary Atri Bhattacharya, followed by Partha Chatterjee, TMC's secretary general on Friday. On Saturday, home secretary Atri Bhattacharya and additional chief secretary Rajiva Sinha yet again came up with a set of clarifications.

"Biswa Bangla is a 100 per cent government-owned company. It was registered in 2014. It has three directors who are government employees. It has two non-executive directors, who are private persons nominated by the government," said Sinha.

On being asked about Roy's claims and the papers he had shown in the meeting, Sinha said, "In 2014, Abhishek Banerjee applied for the registration of the logo of Biswa bangla, later it was withdrawn. And government registered the logo on its name. The brand and the logo were created by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. She had given the logo to the state government. Both the logo and the brand belong to the state."

Mukul Roy, the former general secretary of Trinamool Congress however reacted to the government's clarification immediately. "I have heard that the government would move court against my allegations. I will respond to the notice, if it comes and will see them in court," said Roy.
