AP FACT CHECK: Trump's overreach on VA, trade, economy

WASHINGTON (AP) — Veterans Day prompted President Donald Trump to take stock of what's been done to fix health care for those in uniform.

AP Fact Checks found he claimed more progress than has been made.

He called the Department of Veterans Affairs "a whole new place" that's made "amazing" progress. This, despite persistent old problems.

Several initiatives are lagging, like one to overhaul the department's information technology to reduce waiting times. That could take eight more years.

Trump's tendency to overreach extended to other topics during his Asia trip.

For example, he complained about lack of reciprocity with Japan on autos.

But Japan places no tariff on fully assembled imports. The U.S. has a 2.5 percent tariff on most auto imports. That favors the U.S. The U.S.-Japan auto trade imbalance exists for other reasons.
