The three municipalities in Delhi have issued over 300 fines for dust pollution since Wednesday, when the graded action plan came into force after the city’s pollution levels reached alarming levels. Fines were issued to construction sites that failed to follow norms for controlling dust pollution.
Taking action
The north corporation has issued 156 fines in the last three days. Out of these 25 were issued on Wednesday, 100 on Thursday and 31 on Friday. The SDMC issued a total of 189 fines and the EDMC issued 101 fines.
The south corporation issued 86 fines on Wednesday, 70 on Thursday, and 33 on Friday. The EDMC issued 20 on Wednesday, 55 on Thursday and 26 on Friday.
Officials of the north corporation said that the civic body is doing their bit to prevent the already high levels of pollution from increasing further. “The guidelines say that all construction sites should cover the boundaries of the area panels or thick sheets. They are also supposed to sprinkle the sites with water to avoid the dust from flying,” the official said.
The official added that from Friday, the enforcement teams will ensure the temporary ban on construction activity in the city.
