Coimbatore: The forest department officials tranquilised a 30-year-old male elephant to give treatment to its injured leg at Kodanur village near Anaikatti on Saturday morning.

The elephant had suffered a major injury on its leg and had been roaming around Anaikatti area for more than a week. Many residents, who noticed the injured elephant, informed the forest department officials and requested them to help treat the animal. The forest officials had been monitoring the elephant for several days. They also suspected that the elephant may have been separated from its herd after its injury.

On Saturday morning, the elephant was spotted near Kondanur village. Forest department veterinarian Manoharan along with other forest officials reached the spot.

They tranquilized the elephant but the elephant lay down on the side where it was injured.

So, the forest officials could not treat it. They brought in earthmovers and lifted the elephant and turned it on the other side. Then, the elephant was treated.
