HUBBALLI: Except for the detention of BJP protesters in some areas, Tipu Jayanti passed off peacefully in the North Karnataka region. BJP MLA Anand Singh drew the attention of the public and the media by participating in Tipu Jayanti celebrations in Hosapete.
A tense situation prevailed in Hubballi on Friday morning, when BJP workers tried to protest against the celebration of Tipu Jayanti.
In defiance of police restrictions against taking out any rally, BJP workers gathered at the Court Circle by 11am, to protest the jayanti. Hhundreds of police personnel were deployed at the circle to prevent any untoward incidents. When BJP workers started shouting slogans against the government, the police took them into custody. BJP city district unit president Nagesh Kalburgi, former president Mahesh Tenginakai and corporators Shivanand Muttannavar, Shivu Menasinkai, Veeranna Savadi and RSS leader Jayatirth Katti were among the detained.
DCP (law and order) Renuka Sukumar said about 200 people were detained as a precautionary measure. "They will be prosecuted under the Karnataka Police Act and will be released at the CAR grounds. Apart from this, there were no anti-Tipu Jayanti protests in the city. As per the government order, we have not allowed any organization to celebrate Tipu Jayanti,"she said.
The police barred the entry of the public at the Mini Vidhana Soudha, due to Tipu Jayanti celebrations conducted by the taluk administration. They locked both the main gates and erected temporary barriers. They even did not allow revenue, land records and Taluk Panchayat staff, who had come without identity cards.
In Haveri, the district administration celebrated Tipu's birth anniversary amidst tight security. District in-charge minister Rudrappa Lamani, ZP president Kotreshappa Baseganni, HUDA president Sanjeevakumar Neralagi and Muslim leaders participated in the event. The BJP district unit observed a 'Black Day' by protesting at the party office.
"Tippu Jayanti celebrations concluded peacefully across the district, however we have filed a case against a Muslim organization at Belagalpet in Hanagal taluk, as they were trying to take out a procession along with music systems, neglecting the prohibition order," said superintendent of police K Parashuram.
In Raichur, some Tipu fans tried to take out a procession from Tipu Circle to Jambaldinni Rang Mandir. District minister Tanvir Seth and thousands of supporters paid their tribute to Tipu Sultan on the occasion. Immediately after the departure of the minister, some of his supporters raised slogans praising Tipu, and tried to take out a procession. Police officials succeeded in convincing them to not take out a procession.
In Davanagere, as many as 98 activists belonging to the BJP, VHP and other pro-Hindu organizations, were taken into custody by the police, as preventive arrest, and later released. They tried to disturb Tipu Jayanti celebrations at the Government Boys high school grounds, after which police took them into custody. Tipu jayanti festivities were flagged off by local MLC Abdul Jabbar in the presence of DC D S Ramesh and superintendent of police Bheemashanakr S Guled. Similarly, the event was also held in Chitradurga town, but did not get much response.
In Kalaburagi, Muslims in Jevargi did not participate in Tipu Jayanti celebrations, as the government has not allowed them to celebrate it like other jayantis in the state. Criticising the government's way of celebrating the jayanti, all Muslim leaders have kept themselves away from the function. Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sanga president and CPM leader Maruti Manpade, along with other members, tried to celebrate the jayanti at Shahabad, but the police prevented them from doing so. Amidst tight police security, the Kalaburagi district administration celebrated the jayanti at S M Pandit Rang Mandir in the city, in which district minister Sharana Prakash Patil participated.

"I am not bothered about the party's actions but bothered about the people of my constituency. At the time of the rule of the Vijayanagara empire, the rulers treated people of all religions equally. I am representing the same assembly constituency now. I have friends from all castes, religion and communities," he said. Govindarajulu, a close aide of BJP MP B Sriramulu and former MLA G Somashaker Reddy, organised Tippu Jayanti celebrations at the Cowl bazaar BJP office on Friday.
