Meet with CM fails to break deadlock over ore transport

PONDA: A meeting convened by chief minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday afternoon to resolve the Dharbandora Vedanta mining ore transportation deadlock was inconclusive as the truckers and miners stuck to their respective stances on the issue. The truckers will meet at Dabal on Sunday to decide on their future course of action.

Speaking to STOI, president of the Dharbandora truck owners' association, Balaji Gawas, said that they are firm on their demand for a fixed rate of Rs 12.50 per tonne per km for the entire route with diesel at Rs 52 per litre.

The mining company had planned to start mining transportation under police cover from Tuesday and the truckers had foiled their plan. Chief minister Manohar Parrikar had convened a meeting between Sanvordem MLA Deepak Pauskar, Vedanta and Dharbandora Truck Owners' Association at the chief minister's official residence at Altinho, Panaji, on Saturday afternoon.

Vedanta's chief operating officer for India, Sauvick Majumdar and Gawas of the Dharbandora Truck Owners' Association attended the meeting.

Supporters of Sanvordem MLA Pauskar and BJP MLA from Curchorem, Nilesh Cabral, differ in their stance over the ore transporation issue. Dharbandora truckers will decide on Sunday whether to start the transport or not with the rates suggested by the chief minister, Gawas said.
