NAGPUR: Murder convict Amit Gudhbawre (40) made an unsuccessful bid to commit suicide in barrack no. 1 of Central Jail on Friday.
Jail officials said he tried to hang himself with a bed sheet in front of other inmates. One of the inmates raised an alarm and alerted security guard, who immediately took him out and shifted to other barrack.
Sources said Gudhbawre, a resident of Nagpur, has been serving life sentence since 2015 over murder charges. He climbed atop the water tank placed in the barrack, tied a knot with the bed sheet around his neck and fixed the sheet's other end to the wooden beam.
An offence of attempt to commit suicide has been registered at Dhantoli police station.
Deputy inspector of general (prisons) Yogesh Desai told TOI, "The attempt was probably been made to seek attention, drag the jail administration into trouble or threaten officials. If he really wanted to kill himself, he would have done it secretly. He is now being treated by a psychologist to ascertain the exact reason behind the attempt."
Superintendent of police (prisons) Rani Bhonsale said following the brutal murder of Ayush Pugaliya, who was serving triple life sentence for kidnapping and killing Kush Katariya, the administration started keeping an eye on inmates who might attempt suicide.
She said central jails across states have been provided psychologists to counsel the inmates, after seeing their behavioural changes, since September. Daily, around 60 underwent counselling to get their history. However, the team did not find any suspicious symptoms in Gudhbawre, Bhonsale added.
