HUBBALLI: A 7-year-old boy on his way to school was attacked by a dog on Mantur Road in the city on Thursday. Afridi Bepari, from Ambedkar Colony, is a student of the government primary school on Mantur Road. The dog bit the boy on his cheek. Bepari is admitted to Chitguppi Hospital.

Sources said Afridi has severe injuries on his face, for which he is receiving treatment. Residents of the area expressed anger over the negligence of the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation in reining in stray dogs. According to health department statistics, the district, on average, sees 15 dog-bite cases in a day.

"In cases of dog bites, the HDMC bears the cost of treatment for victims if they are admitted to private hospitals," HDMC veterinary officer Dr Ravi Salimath said.

Sources said the district has reported 4,716 cases since January this year, and more than 50% of them were from Dharwad taluk. Some 2,610 cases were reported in Dharwad taluk, 147 in Hubballi, 823 in Navalgund, 596 in Kundgol and 540 cases in Kalghatgi taluk. Dr Salimath said action has been taken to curb the stray dog menace in the twin cities. "After the incident on Thursday, six stray dogs were caught in Ambedkar Colony. We'll extend our hunt to other areas.

The animal birth control (ABC) programme has been taken up. The ABC programme did not kick off for nine months as none participated in the tender exercise. Now, an agency has come forward to conduct the programme. Some 490 dogs were sterilized in October. Apart from this, anti-rabies vaccines have been administered to dogs, besides sterilizing them," he said.
