The trial in the first case in which 15 people from Kasaragod migrated to Afghanistan to join the Islamic State started at the National Investigation Agency (NIA) special court here on Thursday.

The proceedings began with Judge Santhosh Kumar examining three witnesses in the case.

The witnesses examined were the brother of Abdulla Abdul Rashid of Kasaragod, the prime accused in the case, one of his aunts, and a village officer, who is an official witness.

During the day, Yasmeen Mohammed Zahid of Bihar, who was arrested in the case, was also produced before the court.

The court examined digital evidences presented by the NIA, which included messages, videos, and voice calls made by the accused. According to sources, the court is slated to examine five more witnesses in the case on Friday.

There are a total of 68 prosecution witnesses in the case and their examination is slated to be completed by December 4.

The case pertains to the alleged migration of 15 youths from Kasaragod district to Nagarhar province in Afghanistan to join the outlawed outfit last year. The case, first probed by the Kasaragod police, was handed over to the NIA.
