The statement of Rekha Sharma, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), on human trafficking cases in Kerala shows her lack of understanding of the socio-political situation in the State, Kerala State Women’s Commission (KSWC) member M.S. Thara has said.
Addressing the media here on Thursday, she said KSWC had not received any complaints about human trafficking. “We don’t know much about her statement either,” she added.
Ms. Thara and Shiji Sivaji, another member of the commission, however, expressed concern over the growing number of cases related to harassment of women at workplace.
Many such cases taken up
Many such cases and those pertaining to domestic violence were taken up by the commission on Thursday.
The members said several institutions were yet to set up the mandatory vigilance committees to address harassment cases and added that those who had constituted the committees did not address complaints properly. They said the commission would intervene in such cases to ensure justice.
The commission also instructed the Department of Social Justice to take steps to help a girl whose father had died in mysterious circumstances.
The department was directed to make arrangements for the higher studies of the girl who had scored 75% marks in the Plus Two examination. She and her mother are now living in a temporary shed.
Of the 77 complaints heard at the adalat, 17 were resolved.
Three complaints were referred to the full sitting of the commission. Thirty-six complaints will be considered at the next sitting.
