Aadhaar Card Online Updation: Latest Changes You Need To Know

The UIDAI or Unique Identification Authority of India, the issuer of the 12-digit Unique Identity Number (UID) and Aadhaar card, has made some changes to the online tools it provides to Aadhaar card holders looking to update their basic details. Now, the UIDAI allows only address to be updated online or by post. Only address can be updated online or by post with effect from October 20, 2017, the UIDAI said on microblogging site Twitter. Previously, the UIDAI website also allowed changes to other basic details on Aadhaar card, such as name and date of birth. "All current update requests (submitted before 20th Oct 2017) will be completed as per standard process," the UIDAI noted.

Individuals looking to change or update details such as name, date of birth, mobile number and email address will now have to visit the 'Aadhaar Kendra' or Aadhaar centre nearest to them in order to make a request. This was said by the UIDAI on Twitter.

Aadhaar is the 12-digit personal identification number issued by the UIDAI. This number, known as UID or Unique Identity Number, is also printed on Aadhaar card, an identity card available in physical as well as digital form. "Aadhaar is a lifelong unique 12-digit random number assigned to a resident which is verifiable online anywhere anytime using the Aadhaar authentication platform," the UIDAI adds on its website.

How to update address fed into Aadhaar database

Once on the UIDAI website, find and click on the 'Address Update Request (Online)' tool. This tool can also be accessed through its link.(A screenshot taken from the UIDAI website)

Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar card number and click on 'Send OTP'. OTP or one-time password is sent by the Aadhaar system on the user's registered mobile number.(The user is required to enter the Aadhaar number and the OTP to proceed by clicking 'Login')

On the next page, select 'address' and proceed by clicking 'Submit'.(The user can proceed by selecting 'Address' and clicking 'Submit')

At the next step, fill in the new or correct details.(The user is required to fill in the new details in the online form)(The UIDAI portal provides a transliteration facility in local language)

On the next page, the UIDAI portal enables the user to check the entries.(On this page of the Aadhaar portal, users can review the information fed by them for correctness)

Check the details thoroughly and proceed.

At this stage, the user is required to submit a valid document supporting the change. Users are required to upload digital files created by scanning the original documents.(The user is required to select the type of supporting document and upload the respective file to proceed)

"Upload original scan copies, else your update request will be rejected... Upload only the valid documents to avoid update request from rejection," the UIDAI noted.

Select from the available service providers and proceed. At this stage, the UIDAI portal also displays the estimated time required to process your request.(The UIDAI portal displays information on the estimated time required to process your updation request)

At the end of submission, a URN or Update Request Number is issued. This URN can be used to track the status of your request.(The portal displays the URN along with the date of submission)

Documents required for Aadhaar address change

"Residents are required to upload scanned image of original Proof of Address(PoA)/self signed (self-attested) copy of PoA documents for update/correction. View the valid list of documents," the UIDAI added. The documents required for address change include passport, bank statement/passbook, statement of Post Office account/passbook, ration card, voter id, driving license, water bill and telephone landline bill, among others, according to the UIDAI website. The bills for water, telephone and electricity must not be older than three months, it noted.
