Salvation Army of Norristown opens emergency shelter to homeless under “code blue” alert

NORRISTOWN >> The Salvation Army of Norristown announced today it will open as a Code Blue emergency shelter at 8 p.m., (tonight) Friday, November 10, through 8 a.m., Saturday, November 11. It is prepared to remain open as an emergency shelter through Monday if requested by Montgomery County. The Salvation Army, located at 533 Swede Street, Norristown, has set up cots in its gym to accommodate up to 15 women seeking a warm and safe place to sleep. Meals will also be provided. Families with children seeking emergency housing will stay in The Salvation Army of Norristown’s on-site family shelter facilities.

Montgomery County officials sound a “Code Blue” alert in periods of extreme, life-threatening weather, defined as a wind-chill factor of 20 degrees or below. Weather reports for Friday, November 10, call for a high of 39 and a low of 20 degrees in Norristown. The Salvation Army is one of several agencies throughout Montgomery County that expands its services to those without adequate shelter during a “Code Blue” alert.

The Salvation Army of Norristown serves more than 3,700 individuals in need each year. In addition to “Code Blue” emergency overflow shelter services, it provides transitional housing for families, music education and instruction for youth, summer camp, a senior support program, holiday meals and gift distribution to families in need, community meals, an emergency food pantry, and worship services.
