VARANASI: Chief of army staff General Bipin Rawat said that the stone pelting in Jammu and Kashmir has been reduced to a great extent.
"Our soldiers and other security forces like CRPF, BSF and civil police are acting in coordination to put a check on such incident. It is not correct to say that stone pelting is emerging again in J&K. In fact there is a significant reduction in such incident. We are getting success," said General while talking to reporters here on Friday.
"Such type of problem is not resolved overnight. We have to adopt a multipronged approach to tackle it. Government is taking its own stand, and other agencies like intelligence and security are working in a coherent manner. I can assure that we will get success to weed out the problem if the operation continues in such a way," he said.
General Rawat along with his family members arrived Varanasi on a two-day visit to take part in the bicentenary celebration of 9 Gorkha Rifles at 39 Gorkha Training Centre. He also went to Kashi Vishwanath temple to offer prayer,
"I feel exalted to be the part of bicentenary celebration of 9 Gorkha Rifles, which has a glorious history in Indian Army", he said adding, "I went to Kashi Vishwanath temple to take blessings of Lord Shiva. I pray to God to shower his blessings upon Indian Army. I whish that our soldiers either posted on the borders or elsewhere are capable to perform their duty".
When asked about shortage of weapons for the army, General said, "There is no dearth of arms and ammunition with the army. We need to modernize our arms and ammunitions continuously with latest technology. We are trying to introduce modern weapons in the army."
On Doklam issue, he said that there is no direct role of army. "Our political establishment is looking after the issue. Efforts are on to maintain normalcy in Doklam. Indian army is alert and keeping an eye on the situation," he added.
When asked about the demand of conferring the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna to late Field Marshal Km Cariappa, General said, "Only the government can take any decision on this matter, I would not like to make any comment on it."
General Rawat laid wreath at the War Memorial at 39 GTC to pay homage to martyrs. He also inaugurated a museum on the occasion and met veterans and serving officers of army. Earlier, on Thursday evening he took a boat ride in Ganga and saw Ganga aarti and also performed deep daan at Dashashwamedh Ghat.
