After years of being on the drawing board, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) inched closer to construction Thursday with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) appointing contractors for its construction. In a meeting, the executive committee of the MMRDA accorded administrative approval to the appointment of three contractors to construct the three packages of the 22-km-long sea link.

The package-1 (Sewri side of the sea bridge) will be constructed by a consortium of M/s L&T-IHI, package 2 (Navi Mumbai side of the sea bridge) by M/s Daweoo-TPL (JV) and package-3, the bridge portion on land towards Chirle, by M/s L&T.

“MTHL, a very important area development project, will not only provide excellent connectivity with the new airport at Panvel and for the traffic towards Pune and Goa, it will also make available vast parcels of underdeveloped land in Navi Mumbai creating a positive impact on the development of the city. The flyover on NH-4 will rid the motorists of congestion and time consuming snarls,” said U P S Madan, MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner.

In their bid submissions, the contractors have quoted Rs 7,637 crore for package 1, Rs 5,612 crore for package 2 and Rs 1,013 crore for package 3, bringing the total cost for civil construction to Rs 14,262 crore. The MMRDA had initially estimated a cost of Rs 14,137 crore.

The executive committee, headed by Sumit Mallick, chairman, executive committee, MMRDA and chief secretary, Maharashtra government, also finalised contractors and consultants for other key projects on Thursday.
The committee also appointed M/s Systra MVA Consulting India Pvt Ltd as Detail Design Consultants for the Wadala-Ghatkopar-Mulund-Thane-Kasarvadavali Metro-4 corridor.

“The Metro-4 corridor will not only provide quicker and safe mode of transport to the people from sister cities – Mumbai and Thane, it will also reduce vehicle trips on the route. The corridor will encourage people to opt for comfortable Metro journey compared to languishing in irritating traffic jams,” Madan added. M/s T&T Infra Pvt Ltd was appointed to construct a flyover at Navade Phata Junction to improve traffic network and ease congestion on NH-4.

M/s Fairwood Infra and Services (P) Ltd (JV) were appointed to provide consultancy services for design work of architectural, civil MEP works, design development, procurement of construction contract, supervision during construction and DLP of buildings at Wadala Truck Terminal.
