BHAWANIPATNA: At least four persons were killed and one injured when the car in which they were travelling dashed against a roadside tree on NH-26 near Junagarh in Kalahandi district.

Police said the mishap occurred when the travellers were returning home after having dinner at a Dhaba.

On their way back, the car driver lost control over the steering and hit the roadside tree. The car has been completely damaged, the police said.

The deceased have been identified as Ganesha Mahalik, Bablu Mahalik, Arun Sahu and Biswajit Pradhan. All the deceased were in their mid-20s and hailed from Junagarh.

The driver of the car Abhi Bag, who received serious injuries, was rushed to District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) at Bhawanipatna. He was later shifted to VSS Medical College and Hospital at Burla after his condition started deteriorating.

“It appears from the extent of damage that speed of the vehicle was high. We are verifying whether the driver was drunk or he was suffering from sleep inertia. Bodies have been sent for the postmortem and further investigation is on,” said a police official.
