Nagpur: The Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court admitted petition filed by teachers from various Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) challenging Maharashtra Government (GR) of 2014 of prohibiting them from doing private after teaching hours.
A division bench comprising justice Bhushan Dharmadhikari and Swapna Joshi stated that the final hearing would begin from January next year. All these 26 petitions from various GMCHs in Vidarbha had strongly objected to the GR issued in 2014 which barred them from private practice.
The GR had barred doctors drawing non-practicing allowance in government medical institutions to practice in private hospitals and clinics, after working hours. Earlier, they challenged this GR in the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal (MAT), but their appeal was dismissed.
The doctors then approached the high court which granted them for relief granted by staying the government's order. This allowed the doctors to practice privately and since have been serving in government as well as private hospitals. Akshay Naik appeared for the doctors.
