PUNE: The Pune police on Thursday booked 17 suspects, including a criminal lawyer and four policemen, under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) for plotting the kidnapping of former corporator Kailash Kadam.
Additional commissioner of police (crime) Pradip Deshpande accorded sanction to prosecute 13 suspects under MCOCA after investigations revealed that they were active members of an organised crime syndicate involved in conspiracy, kidnapping and procuring weapons.
The four policemen were charged for abetting the syndicate. To execute his plot, criminal lawyer Sushil Mancharkar had planned the escape of three undertrial inmates — Raju Patre (32), Santosh Jagtap and Santosh Chandilkar — in April.
The trio had escaped while they were being brought back to Yerawada jail from a Khandala court in Satara district by a Pune police escort team.
With the help of his accomplice, Suresh Zende (29) of Thergaon, Mancharkar gave the trio Rs 5 lakh as an advance and 30 cartridges.
Before the trio could execute the plot, the crime branch arrested Patre from his Ambegaon residence. Patre told police it was Zende who had helped him and the other two in escaping. Zende was arrested later. Zende later revealed the name of Mancharkar who wanted to eliminate Kadam following a dispute.
