A computer engineer was arrested from New Delhi railway station on Tuesday for allegedly smuggling liquor to Kerala. The police claim to have recovered 320 bottles of whiskey.

Birbal (32) is a resident of Rajasthan. The police spotted unattended boxes, containing whiskey bottles, lying at the station during a check on November 2 and registered a case under the Excise Act. “CCTV footage showed cart-puller Satish transporting the boxes. He was questioned,” said DCP (Metro) Pankaj Singh.

Unemployed

The cart-puller said Mr. Birbal claimed to be an Army officer and paid ₹500 for loading the boxes on Kerala Express.

“His call detail records were checked. The number belonged to Mr. Birbal, who was arrested,” said Mr. Singh.

Mr. Birbal allegedly told the police that he failed to find a job after completing his diploma in engineering and needed money. “He came in contact with one Reddy from Chittur, who offered money to supply liquor to Kerala,” he said.
