China says consensus reached with US against terrorism in South Asia

BEIJING: China said on Thursday that it had "reached a consensus" with the US on the issue of anti-terrorism and stability in South Asia during the ongoing visit by President Donald Trump.

"What I know is that the two sides also discussed the anti-terrorism issue and the upholding of peace and stability in South Asia and reached a consensus in this respect," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said.

Talking about China-US relations, Hua said, "In terms of fighting terrorism, we share common interests. The two countries stand ready to work with other parties for strong anti-terrorism cooperation." She did not clarify if other parties meant countries in South Asia like India.

Speaking to journalists after his meeting with Xi, Trump said both leaders were committed to working together in Afghanistan and "stopping radical Islamic terrorism".

It's not clear if the two countries reached a consensus on the basic need to curb terrorism or went into details of terrorist networks operating from Pakistan and Afghanistan.

India views the problem of terrorism in South Asia differently and suspects Pakistan of offering safe haven to terrorists. Beijing defends Pakistan's record on counter-terrorism saying it has made great sacrifices on this count.

China has repeatedly blocked India's attempts at the UN to have Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Masood Azhar designated terrorist, although the US is one of the countries backing New Delhi.

Chinese officials were also engaged in a trilateral dialogue on terrorism with representatives from Pakistan and Afghanistan on Wednesday. Talking to the official broadcaster, China Global Television Network on Wednesday, US National Security Adviser General (retd) HR McMaster gave the impression that Washington would not relax its campaign for wiping out terrorism.

He said the US and China can join hands in "combating trans-national terrorist threats that emanate from particular areas of the world". He further said, "More effective operations are being launched against the Taliban and the Haqqani Network. We have an opportunity to improve our intelligence sharing, our law-enforcement efforts and our counter-terror finance efforts. And so these are just some of the many areas where US interests and Chinese interests are very much aligned and will allow us to work even more closely together."
