PONDA: A sense of fear gripped Dhulay village in Dharbandora taluka on Thursday, after a leopard allegedly attacked a horticulturist in broad daylight.

Jayram Gaonkar, 50, who hails from Dhaukond, was in the forest to clear the area in preparation for the next cashew season.

Dharbandora range forest officer Dharajit Naik said some villagers informed him that Gaonkar was accompanied by dogs while working in the cashew plantation. Hence, the locals believed that Gaonkar could have come under attack from the leopard after the animal was drawn to the dogs, Naik added.

Gaonkar has been admitted to Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) and is under observation. He sustained injuries to his hand, leg and head. Forest officials are awaiting his recovery to record his account of the incident.

"The exact picture will be clear only after the man is fit to reveal the incident ," Naik said.
