NOIDA/GREATER NOIDA: As smog and dust pollution made life miserable on the third consecutive day, traffic police and local residents jointly distributed masks to commuters on Thursday. The drivers were also sensitised about safe driving on the Yamuna expressway where a series of accidents took place due to low visibility on Wednesday.
Every year during winter, many accidents occur on Noida-Greater Noida expressway and Yamuna expressway due to fog as riders drive at high speed even when visibility drops. "To avoid such accidents, drivers should be given pamphlets with pictures of accidents and number of lives lost or injured, at every toll plaza so that they can be sensitised and made aware," said Alok Singh, founder, Active Citizens Group.
The highways should have LED screens showing speed limits and during emergency they should light up with warning signals, he said.
On Wednesday, local social groups in Noida like Chitragupta Sabha Trust (CST) and Narayan Cultural Chetna Trust (NCCT) distributed 1,000 three-layered anti-pollution masks at the intersection of Sector 12/22. "Since changes in weather and air conditions are extreme around this time, we urged all residents to wear masks," said Rajan Srivastava of CST. These masks made of paper or spun bond, non-woven material come in three layers and helps filter the impure, dust particles by almost 50%.
