Telugu students assaulted by locals at NIT-Imphal
A day after it was reported that several students at NIT-Imphal, hailing from Bihar, were assaulted by locals, it has emerged that several students hailing from the two Telugu speaking states, were also among those who were roughed up, on Sunday.
While Bihar CM Nitish Kumar has communicated with Manipur CM N Biren Singh and sought his support, Telugu students at NIT have reached out to media here. A senior official in Manipur government said that a few Manipuri students were playing football and at another part of the same ground some students hailing from other parts of the country were playing cricket. Arguments erupted between two groups over some petty issues and this led to fisticuffs. On their way back to hostel they were reportedly roughed up by local students.
After the incident, students hailing from other parts of the country approached registrar of NIT-Imphal with a complaint. However, allegedly upon not receiving a positive response from him, students gheraod the registrar. This was allegedly followed by the students damaging four vehicles including a police vehicle. Two persons, including a sub-inspector were injured in stone pelting, said the official.
