The government will not terminate mobile connections that are not linked with Aadhaar, Telecom Secretary said Aruna Sundararajan said on Wednesday as per an article in the Mint.
The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) is awaiting Supreme Court judgement on an Aadhaar case regarding people not wanting to link their mobile number with their 12-digit biometric-based unique ID number, Sundararajan told the newspaper.
She added that DoT was trying to chalk out a way to let Indians living abroad to link their mobile numbers with Aadhaar.
Earlier this month, the Centre told the Supreme Court that the deadline for linking mobile numbers with Aadhaar was set at February 6.
The Centre also said that from December 1 people could verify their mobile SIM through Aadhaar without giving their biometrics to telecom service providers. The Aadhaar regulatory body UIDAI has made available an OTP verification option for the same.
On the other hand, the DoT is set to finalize the new telecom policy by February next year and would publish its draft copy by the end of this year for public comments.
