NEW DELHI: Haryana minister Rao Narbir Singh on Thursday called into question the CBI's findings in the murder of Gurugram schoolboy Pradhyumn Thakur and claimed that nobody believed that a 16-year-old could have committed the heinous crime.
"I still can't believe that it was done by the Class XI student. I would just like to reiterate that there must be an impartial probe. Neither people nor I can believe CBI's findings," the BJP MLA was quoted as saying by ANI.
The investigating agency had apprehended a Class 11 student at Ryan International on Tuesday in connection to the killing of seven-year-old Pradhyumn, who was found with his throat slit inside a school toilet on September 8. In its submission to a juvenile court, the CBI said the minor suspect had confessed to the murder. This, even as the boy's father has been vehemently asserting his son's innocence.
According to the agency, the highschooler allegedly murdered his junior to get the school to declare a holiday in order to defer a scheduled parent-teacher meeting and an examination.
The central agency gave a clean chit to bus conductor Ashok Kumar, who was the sole accused during the Gurugram Police's investigation in the case. The latest findings are a further embarrassment for the local cops, who had to hand over the probe to the CBI on the Haryana government's orders following emphatic demands from Pradhyumn's parents.
On Wednesday, Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar had defended the state's police, contending that the force was not given the requisite time to complete its probe.
"Haryana police had not completed its investigation. When investigations were on, a demand was raised that the matter be handed over to the CBI. It was handed over to them. CBI is now conducting investigations. It is their job, not ours," Khattar said at an event in Chandigarh.
Reiterating the same, Gurugram Police Commissioner Sandeep Khirwar offered further explanation: "We had not concluded investigation, we had not done a specific role attribution. Evidence was in process of being gathered."
Haryana DGP B S Sandhu denied that there was any pressure on the police to solve the case or that they proceeded in haste. Asked if the probe by the police force was a sham, Sandhu asserted there was no failure on the part of the Gurugram police.
