Come out with ingenuity in building solutions for everyday problems

Illuminating dark areas of a room at daytime, without electricity, seems to have caught the attention of three youngsters from Kurnool district.

The trio: S. Sravani, E. Dharani and S. Maneesha, all hailing from AP Tribal Welfare Residential School (Girls) – Bairluty, chose to replicate and innovate the concept of ‘Solar Bottle Bulb’ with their own working model. The students suspended a plastic bottle, filled with equal parts of water and bleach, in a cardboard box to elucidate on the cost-effective way of harnessing sunlight. This exhibit, along with a horde of innovations, was a major feature during the inaugural session of a three-day Zonal Science Exhibition held at A.P. Tribal Welfare Residential School for Boys (APTWRS) near Renigunta, here on Wednesday.

Spread across various themes such as Health, Agriculture, Transportation, Communication, Mathematical Modelling and much more, about 350 students chose to showcase their ingenuity in building solutions for everyday problems. While the science exhibits such as Smart Lights for Highways, various alarm systems, Salt Water Based Mobile Charging System, Mini Pencil Emergency Light etc., focussed on the prevailing issues, an experiment explaining the ‘Bernoulli’s Principle’ (about fluid dynamics) by juggling a ping pong ball using a vertical stream of water amazed the students and visitors alike.

In addition to this, the students chose to focus on developing exhibits for augmenting road safety such as ‘Compulsory Helmet,’ a two-wheeler which would operate only when a rider dons the helmet, ‘A Blindman's Handstick,’ a prototype which alarms visually challenged people of oncoming objects using alerts and vibrations, along with an embedded light to warn people of their presence. About 45 APTWR schools (Rayalaseema zone) are taking part in the event, which would conclude on Friday. The exhibition showcasing more than 200 innovations will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., followed by cultural programmes.
