Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announces loan waiver for weavers

BENGALURU: Following the waiver of agricultural loans for farmers, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced waiver of loans up to `50,000 for weavers. The decision was taken on late Tuesday night after a review meeting with officials from the district administration.

The waiver is on the same lines as the one announced for farmers, and applicable for short-term loans taken by the weavers from state-run cooperative banks. More than 9,000 weavers are expected to benefit from this decision, which is expected to cost the state government ` 52 crore.

The state has so far released ` 1,064 crore towards loan waiver of farmers. According to the statistics provided by the state, 3,27,018 farmers from 20 districts have benefitted from the ` 50,000 loan waiver as on October 31, 2017. The maximum waivers have been made in Mandya with 28,296 farmers benefitting. It is followed by Kalaburagi where 27,867 have availed the benefits. In Kodagu, minimum 510 farmers made use of the waiver scheme.
