Film festivals provide children a unique opportunity to watch some of the best critically acclaimed films thereby cultivate an appreciation for the arts and creative expression, Mayor of Khammam Municipal Corporation G. Papa Lal said.

He was speaking at the inaugural of a week-long children’s film festival at Sri Tirumala Theater here on Wednesday.

The district level fete is being organised by the State Film Development Corporation coinciding with the 20th International Children’s Film Festival, which got underway in Hyderabad on Wednesday, sources said.

Shaanu — a children’s feature film in Telugu produced by the Children’s Film Society of India was screened soon after the inaugural ceremony. Two more children’s films were screened on the inaugural day.

The organisers have made arrangements for screening of a total of 21 children’s films both Telugu and Hindi films during the week-long district level children’s film fete at the same venue here.

The School Education authorities have devised a schedule to enable children of both the government and private schools to watch the films. Two Hindi films — Chota Sipahi and Chutkan Ki Mahabharath — besides a Telugu film — Poorna — will be screened from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday.
