A MOB on Thursday ransacked a private nursing home in Hooghly district following death of a 18-year-old girl, who was suffering from fever.

The deceased, Priya Bhakat — a resident of Rishra in Hooghly — was admitted to Park Medicare Centre at Bangur Park in Rishra on Wednesday. She died the next morning while the nursing home was allegedly in the process to shift her to another hospital for better treatment. Alleging medical negligence, her relatives ransacked the hospital and broke window panes.

The family alleged that Bhakat’s condition deteriorated, as she was suffering from dengue and was wrongly treated.
“According to the family, 24 hours after Bhakat was admitted to Park Medicare Centre, they received a call from the nursing home, saying that she was not responding to treatment and it was important to shift her to a Kolkata hospital. When the relatives reached the hospital, they found the girl had already died. The family alleged that the hospital tried to shift her to another hospital after she had died,” said a police officer. “The incident triggered panic and a large mob gathered at the spot, which ransacked the nursing home,” he added.

The situation was brought under control after Additional CP (Detective Department) Atul B, Rishra Municipality Chairman Vijay Sagar Mishra and other officials rushed to the spot.

An official of the nursing home, on condition of anonymity, said: “The patient’s condition had deteriorated on Thursday morning. She died while she was being taken out of her ward, to be shifted her to another hospital in Kolkata for better treatment.”

Police said no complaints have been lodged either by the family or the nursing home.
