Tirupur: Collector K S Palanisamy promised to shut down the Tasmac shop opened recently at Devarayampalayam permanently after local residents staged a protest at the district collectorate here on Wednesday.

The liquor shop, which was relocated thrice in the past six months, will have to be shifted for the fourth time. "Tasmac authorities will soon remove the shop from Devarayampalayam. They also have to identify a new place to relocate the shop," said a revenue official.

The Tasmac shop, which was originally established in Pallapalayam, was relocated to Devarayampalayam at Ichipatti panchayat on November 2. Since then, the villagers had been demanding its closure.

On Tuesday, officials had taken a decision to shut the Tasmac shop temporarily following stiff resistance from the local residents. However, the local residents were not happy with the decision.

On Wednesday, hundreds of them gathered at the district collectorate and staged a protest. Following this, the collector assured them to shut down the shop permanently. Later, the villagers withdrew the protest.
