Saligao: The Saligao panchayat and comunidade have decided not to grant approval to the proposed night market in the village.

A 16-member delegation comprising three panchas, attorney of Saligao comunidade and villagers on Tuesday met Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar to voice their opposition to the project.

It was unanimously decided that Saligao does not need a night market. The locals, including the legislator, pointed out that night markets, being tourist attractions, destroy Goa's villages in ways that cannot be repaired.

"My stand is clear. I am not going to endorse night markets that will disturb the peaceful village life of Saligao. I want to make Saligao a heritage village," Salgaonkar told TOI.

The minister also said he aims to have a dedicated fish and vegetable market. "I want to have a day market to encourage artisans and self-help groups," he added.

The delegation comprised Saligao sarpanch Lafira Remedios Gomes, panch members Daya Kudnekar, Daya Mandrekar, Lucas Remedios, attorney of Saligao comunidade Austin D'Gama, and other villagers Ramesh Ghadi, Mario Mascarenhas, Nicholas Sequeira, Vimla D'Souza, Pradeep Padgaonkar, Marjorie D'Sa, Pradip Parulekar, Muriel D'Souza, Suhail Kiran and Dean D'Cruz.
