Ruckus over BJP mayor candidate’s papers

GHAZIABAD: Alleging irregularities in the nomination form submitted by BJP's mayor candidate Asha Sharma, representatives of other parties created a ruckus outside the nomination filing centre in Ghaziabad on Wednesday. Members of Congress, SP and AAP accused poll officials of giving Sharma leeway to make several corrections in her papers, in gross violation of rules, when nomination forms were being scrutinized on Wednesday.

Election officials conducted an on-the-spot inquiry on the objections raised. Sharma's form was finally given the go-ahead after poll returning officer Rajesh Yadav read out his order on the basis of the inquiry report.

Asha Sharma had filed her application on Tuesday, the last day for filing nomination. AAP alleged the authorisation letter from BJP state unit for its candidates was missing from her papers.

"In case of a missing authorisation letter, a candidate is considered Independent. There is no provision in law to accept the party authorisation letter after the last date. But officials allowed her to do so," said AAP district convener Sachin Sharma.

SP has threatened to move the high court. "Special consideration was given to the BJP candidate. This is not legally tenable," said a supporter of SP mayor candidate Rashi Garg.

As per law, the authorisation letter has to have signature of the person designated for the task by the state unit of the political party. "This person's name and designation is conveyed by a political party to the state poll commission," said Mukesh Tyagi, ex-councillor, BJP.

"Sharma had furnished a letter in which UP BJP president Mahendra Pandey has designated district president Basant Tyagi to nominate candidates in Ghaziabad on his behalf. There were complaints of over-writing, lack of signature on an affidavit, etc, as well. These were rectified during scrutiny in the presence of officials," said Rajesh Yadav.

A spokesperson for Asha Sharma said the allegations were baseless.
