JAIPUR: The absence of governor Kalyan Singh from the convocation ceremony of Rajasthan University (RU) on Wednesday triggered a row after a section of academicians claimed the governor was perturbed over the appointment of a less qualified teacher as dean of the university while bypassing the senior professors.
TOI has learned that these academicians had apprised the Governor House of the controversial decision taken by the university V-C R K Kothari.
Refuting the media report, higher education minister Kiran Maheshwari said, "The governor could not make it to the convocation ceremony due to his ill health. The governor house had informed about his ill health much before the convocation ceremony. There is no question of him withdrawing from the ceremony due to the discord with the university officials," she said while talking to reporters.
The university VC RK Kothari had appointed Vinay Kumar as the dean of commerce department. But, there were other senior faculty members eligible for the ame post. Professor Naveen Mathur was, the most probable candidate for the post of the dean, had then decided to resign from the central library.
Several other professors had also thrown their weight behind Prof Mathur. These irked professors had also complained to the governor house that Kamar's appointment was done while superseding other senior faculty members. They also complained over Kumar was given the post despite the fact that he did not have a PhD.
The university V-C, however, had earlier given a statement in which he claimed Kumar was appointed by his wishes. This, said to have upset Kalyan Singh, who decided not to attend the convocation ceremony. The governor was supposed to be chief guest of the ceremony.
