NEW DELHI: A collective of six Left parties on Wednesday accused the Narendra Modi-led NDA government of celebrating the death and suffering of Indian poor in the name of the government-backed anti-black money day.
The first anniversary of the Centre's demonetisation decision saw opposition parties and the NDA government trade charges over note ban's effects, one alleging it was implemented with disastrous effects, and the other claiming it was an economically and politically sound decision that had helped contain both naxalism and terrorism.
The CPM, CPI, All India Forward Bloc, Revolutionary Socialist Party, Communist Party of India (ML- Liberation) and Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) also said their mass protest against the Modi government's anti-people policy decisions will continue over the next few days. From November 9 to 11, the Left has called for nation-wide protests by all central trade unions in India. Senior Left leader said trade unionists will congregate in Delhi and storm Parliament Street and Jantar Mantar to protest against the government.
Even as the government went all out to highlight what it had achieved in the last one year, marching from Mandi House to Reserve Bank of India in New Delhi, senior Left leaders said demonetisation had systematically helped hoarders legalise their black money, resulted in job losses, and increased the sufferings of the poor. Referring to PM Modi as the "baap of corruption", CPM politburo member Brinda Karat said, "Modi Government has created two records in the world. One, it made people stand and die in queues. Second, even though Modi tried to tell people demonetisation would stop the circulation of black money, he helped hoarders convert their black money into white."
Charging the government with being the first to celebrate the misery of millions, the Left leaders also attacked the NDA government for not following through on their claims of being serious about tackling corruption. "The Panama Papers and now Paradise Papers have shown how corruption has flourished. But even though Pakistan acted against its Prime Minister after he was indicted, Indian government under Modi has done nothing," Karat added. She also pitted the Left leaders as the 'cleanest' of the lot; emphasising that no Left leader had found mention in the Panama and Paradise investigations. On Wednesday, the Left leaders also sought to rake up the unprecedented growth in assets of Jay Amit Shah, BJP president Amit Shah's son, who they alleged was among the few people in India to have benefitted from demonetisation.
Referring to demonetisation followed by the imposition of Goods and Services Tax as an economic disaster, CPI secretary D Raja said, "The decisions have created neither jobs nor brought economic growth for India."
