Hubballi: The walls of the city, which had been beautified by some people who contributed to the expense to make the city look pleasant, have once again been defaced.
The walls have been easy target for political parties, organisations and others to post unauthorized hoardings to publicize their events. The proposed Lingyat rally and ABVP rally have left many walls defaced as organisers of these mega events have pasted bills and pamphlets about them on city walls.
A group of doctors, engineers, artistes and other professionals, united under the 'Colour My City' forum, had beautified public walls with attractive paintings at their own cost as well as with the help of some entrepreneurs. They had also obtained permission from HDMC for their initiative.
However, organisations like Lingayat Swatantra Dharma and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad defaced these walls by pasting their posters. The Lingayat Swatantra Dharma pasted posters about its mega on November 5 while ABVP posted posters inviting students to their rally in Kerala on November 11.
Kiran Uppar, founder, Colour My City, said his group members are very disappointed. "We, in association with other like-minded forums, had worked day and night for a week together to beautify these walls a year ago. We ensured there should be nothing offensive to to any religion or caste or any negative thoughts. We had beautified Vishweshwar Nagar bridge on the theme of Indian Army and it was inaugurated by Mahadevi Koppad, wife of Siachen martyr Hanamantappa Koppad. It's disheartening to see posters pasted on paintings of soldiers," he said.
Dr Sachin Hoskatti, founder, Hubballi Fitness Club, said a complaint has been filed with the HDMC control room and commissioner. "We're not against any individual or organization. We requested the HDMC to create awareness among all to maintain the cleanliness and beauty of the city. Our painting initiative was also aimed at preventing people from spitting all over the place," he said.
The Lingayat Swatantra Dharma and ABVP have defaced walls at Indira Glass House, Vishweshwar Nagar bridge, Ashok Nagar, Gokul Road, Hosur and other places with their posters. It's the third incident in a month that various organisations are defacing walls.
When asked, ABVP said they have pasted posters where painting wasn't done. "We have been pasting posters for decades but no one has objected to it."
HDMC commissioner Siddaligayya Hiremath said he has received complaints from citizens. "We're looking into the matter. We will initiate action against offenders soon," he added.
'We'll remove posters'
Defacing beautified walls is wrong. We won't support it. It has happened by our workers without our knowledge. We, Lingayats, are law-abiding people and never encourage such acts. We'll instruct all our workers to remove such posters immediately.
