As rain pours woes in city, short-staffed BBMP grapples to tackle the problem
BENGALURU: With potholes still dotting the city’s roads even after the expiry of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s deadline, a city-based organisation has moved the High Court seeking directions to BBMP to effectively and expeditiously carry out road repair works to save motorists.
Hearing the public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Dove Drive Without Borders Foundation, a division bench of acting Chief Justice H G Ramesh and Justice P S Dinesh Kumar issued emergent notice to the BBMP Commissioner.
Apart from seeking directions to BBMP to fill potholes in a scientific manner, the petitioner also sought directions to install sign boards and illuminators, major road dividers and speed breakers on the roads. According to the petition, low visibility owing to rains, and presence of potholes on roads make it dangerous for vehicle users. Despite this recurring phenomena, BBMP has neglected to fulfill its statutory duty.
The petition also said that despite the huge volume of vehicles in the city, very little is being done by BBMP to ensure the safety of road users. It said road dividers and speed breakers do not have reflective markers, leading to several fatal accidents.Further hearing will be held on November 22.
