ALLAHABAD: The Maharashtra police has sought help of their UP counterparts in nabbing 30 young autolifters belonging to various east UP districts for scores of thefts committed in their state.

The Maharashtra police has handed over a list containing the names of the youth hailing from Pratapgarh, Muzaffarnagar, Allahabad, Jaunpur, etc., to the Special Task Force (STF) of UP Police. The youths have come under scanner of Mumbai police crime branch for their alleged involvement in hundreds of autothefts in Maharashtra.

Interestingly, most of these tech-savvy autolifters carry expensive high-tech gadgets with them, prefer 'power dressing', check in expensive hotels and have several aliases to avoid suspicion. They mostly steal SUVs and four-wheelers from different parts of Maharastra and sell them in eastern and western UP with forged documents," said a police official.

"The Maharastra police has shared a list of auto-lifters with us. We have been cooperating with our Maharastra counterparts in tightening the noose around wanted auto-lifters running the racket in an organised manner," additional SP, STF, Pravin Singh Chauhan, told TOI on Wednesday.

"The Maharastra police has also provided details of the cases to us. Incidentally, only Pratapgarh accounts for 13 auto-lifters on police radar," he added.

"Police have taken up an operation against the miscreants involved in autolifting after identifying youths hailing from several districts, including Pratapgarh, Allahabad, Jaunpur and Muzaffarnagar," said a senior police official.

He added that these auto-lifters have a nexus with local miscreants and operate in an organized manner in various cities of the state. They own costly mobiles, laptops and other electronic gadgets bought through money accumulated after resale of stolen vehicles.

STF claimed to have taken up an exercise to compile details of listed autolifters and their area of operation. Mumbai crime branch has also handed over the list of cases registered with various police stations in Maharashtra as well as records of those who have been bailed out recently.

"Their modus operandi is simple. They look for temporary jobs in big cities of Maharashtra and carry out recce of SUVs or luxury vehicles. Once they get an opportunity, they steal the vehicle and sell it on forged documents through conduits," said a police official. They usually target unauthorized parking slots where they can execute the crime without any fear of being caught, he added.
