Dejected over the unruly behaviour of their daughter-in-law, an elderly couple, along with their daughter, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at their house on the outskirts of the city in Madanayakanahalli on Monday.

The deceased have been identified as Narasappa, 80, his wife Thayamma, 70, and daughter Hanumamma, 35. Their son Doddegowda, who also consumed poison, is battling for life at a private hospital.

According to the police, they were residents of Bettahalli and were working as agricultural labourers. Doddegowda, a private firm employee, married Vanajakshi six months ago.

According to the police. Vanajakshi had differences with the family and returned to her parents’ house last month accusing them of harassing her. Doddegowda approached the police, who along with some elders in the village, counselled Vanajakshi and sent her back to the family.

However, a few days ago, Vanajakshi picked up a quarrel with the family and left them again. Humiliated by this, the couple decided to end their lives and consumed pesticide after Doddegowda and Hanummama had gone to Taverekere on work.

The neighbours then informed Doddegowda. Dejected, Doddegowda and Hanummama also consumed poison and were found unconscious on the roadside. Passers-by noticed the duo and rushed them to a hospital where Hanumamma was declared brought dead. The condition of Doddegowda is said to be critical.

Both Madanayakanahalli and Taverekere police have taken up a case of unnatural death and are investigating.
