The study was published in March 2017.

For the study, Tweets using hashtag #Demonetization, were collected in two phases - from November 8, 2016 to November 16, 2016 and from November 17, 2016 to November 23, 2016.
States were scored as per a mathematical formula for the Tweets and were ranked as very sad, sad, neutral, very happy or happy.

In both the phases, Telangana scored the maximum negative score among all states, indicating that Twitter users from the state were unhappiest with demonetization. In the first phase of the Tweets recorded by researchers, five states were classified as very sad states - Karnataka, Telangana, Haryana, Bihar and Assam and four states were classified as sad states - Goa, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Coming to the happy states, while five states were classified as very happy - Kerala, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal and six were classified as happy states - Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

In the second phase, six states were found to be very sad - Karnataka, Goa, Tamil Nadu(which was neutral in phase 1), Telangana, UP and Haryana; three were sad - Chattisgarh, Bihar and Uttarakhand.
Whereas, seven states were very happy - Kerala, MH, Guj, Odisha, WB and Jharkhand and happy states were AP, MP, Raj and HP.

4,878 tweets were recorded with #Demonetization for November 8 and 9, 2016, the day when demonetization was announced and immediate next day. Of these, 1,869 (38.31%) were positive, in support of demonetization and 1,270 (26.03%) were negative.
