THANE: A 21-year-old man allegedly set his Kalwa flat on fire before committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan in the kitchen on Wednesday morning.

The Regional Disaster Management Cell of Thane Municipal Corporation received a call about smoke emitting from a second floor flat in Moreshwar Apartments in Kharegaon around 9am.

Firefighters rushed to the flat, broke open the door and found Ajinkya Nikalje's body on the kitchen floor, a burnt rope hanging from the ceiling fan and a noose around his neck.

Police said Nikalje was alone at home when he took the extreme step. His parents, who were visiting a relative in Uran, later told cops that he was undergoing psychiatric treatment. "Nikalje was pursuing hotel management from Pune, but had failed two years ago and dropped out. He was mentally unstable and suffering from depression. Also, his parents had registered an NC two days ago as he was getting violent," said a police officer.

Police have registered an accidental death case.
