‘811 colleges have been served show-cause notices’

Minister for Human Resource Development Ganta Srinivasa Rao on Wednesday warned erring managements of Intermediate colleges in the State to fall in line or face closure in the forthcoming academic year.

Advice to parents

“We want parents to exercise utmost caution while admitting their wards in colleges in the fresh academic year, as hundreds of colleges have been served show-cause notices for non-compliance with the Intermediate Board norms. They are given time of a couple of months to reform themselves, failing which the government is determined to shut down such institutions,” he said at a press conference.

He said that as part of the series of measures initiated by the government to reverse the trend of suicides among the students, especially in private Intermediate colleges, in the State, 13 teams were constituted with the Regional Inspection Officers of the Board of Intermediate Education and other district-level officials.

The team members inspected 706 colleges across the State and found that violation of rules continued unabated in many of the institutions.

Anomalies

“It has been found that 205 colleges continue to conduct study hours beyond 6 p.m. in violation of the rule book, and a few more colleges still change the sections of the students frequently based on their marks. Some of them do not have physical directors. All these colleges have been served show-cause notices,” he said.

The Minister said that making use of the toll-free number introduced by the department to enable Intermediate students seek assistance, 41 students had brought various issues to the fore, most of which were about prolonged study hours.

He said a total of 811 colleges had been served show-cause notices; 27 of them had been asked to close down as they had zero admissions; 194 had been operating unauthorised hostels; and 37, however, approached the department authorities with a plea for regularisation, he said.
